Why Tasks are Left Unfinished?
The truth is that starting a new assignment is easy, finishing them is a very different story; look at the number of unfinished tasks and assignments cluttering up your to-do list.
Unfinished tasks hinder your progress, drain resources and, they cost you money.
Does that sound familiar?
Why do We Leave Assignments Unfinished?
Most of us, (and I include myself) are easily distracted. We are world class at doing the easy stuff, and second class at doing the hard stuff, and it’s the hard stuff that generally brings in the money.
The aim is honourable, yet the reality is much different. You kick off with the intention of completing, and then boom….a distraction….a thought…..a must do….
Ending the distractions and staying on track to complete the task is a tough call, yet it’s easily fixed.
Learn the three most common mistakes that will leave you frustrated and with a long list of unfinished tasks.
Mistake #1: Fuelling the To-Do List
The answer is in the amount of time spent filling the to-do list with random unrelated tasks that serve little or no purpose, other than to make you look important and busy.
The truth is that maintaining the to-do list is a sure sign that you are living on someone else’s agenda, rather that you own.
Mistake #2: No Next Steps (The Anti-climax)
Why? Because you didn’t plan a real next step and the questions and soul-searching starts:
What do I do now?
How can anything compare with that last project…….?
The reality is that every task or goal must have a follow-on action or next step to avoid the feeling of anti-climax
Mistake #3: Having Goals Without a Purpose.
Often the goal you are set is for someone else and it is a golden rule of achievement, that a goal must be self-initiated and for you and you alone.
The sales target for the sales manager, the project for a client and the accounts for the Head of Finance are all common business goals with one massive problem.
They aren’t your goals.
The big problem is how do you achieve your goals when they are for someone else?
The answer is… flip it around, internalise it and make it your own. In other words what will you get from it when you achieve it?
